We had to test all the horses on the farm, which included all of our rescues, and we must treat/vaccinate all the rescues. The equine vaccine was only developed 3 years ago.Īt this point, we are deeply in debt for the vet bills for our personal horses, and moreover, all of our rescue horses/donkeys, which is a hefty number. If they test negative, they receive a vaccine. The horse owners have paid for their horses' testing, and whatever following treatment that is required - if the horse tests positive, they must be put on the antibiotic doxycyline for 1 month. Lepto is contagious, so we had to have every horse on the farm tested for it. None of us even knew horses could get lepto, as it's most commonly associated with dogs, and they get a vaccine for it. Just recently we discovered one of the horses had a case of leptospirosis. We have done retirement boarding for 15 years.
